What Exactly Is Stick Drift?
Stick drift happens when your game thinks you are moving the joystick even though your fingers aren't touching it. In standard controllers, small metal pieces rub against internal sensor tracks as you play. Over time, normal friction and trapped dust cause the controller to send phantom movements to your game.
Fix 1: Adjust In-Game Deadzones (Instant Software Fix)
If your controller shows a small drift value between 0.04 and 0.08 on gamepad-tester.tech, you can usually fix it right inside your game settings without opening the controller:
- Call of Duty / Warzone: Settings > Controller > Deadzone Inputs > Left/Right Stick Min > Increase by 0.02 increments until drift stops.
- Apex Legends: Settings > Controller > Look Deadzone > Change from "None" to "Small".
- Fortnite: Settings > Controller Options > Controller Deadzone > Set to 7% - 10%.
- Rocket League: Settings > Controls > Controller Deadzone > Set to 0.08.
Fix 2: Cleaning with Compressed Air & 99% Alcohol
In many cases, dust, pet hair, or crumbs are simply stuck inside the stick module:
- Unplug and turn off the controller.
- Push the thumbstick to one side to expose the gap underneath.
- Blow short bursts of compressed air into the opening while rotating the stick in circles.
- Put 1–2 drops of 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) into the stick base. (Never use regular 70% rubbing alcohol because it contains too much water!)
- Rotate the stick for 60 seconds to clean out any trapped dirt. Let it dry completely for 15 minutes.
- Test it again on gamepad-tester.tech.
Fix 3: Calibrate Controller Firmware
Both Sony and Microsoft provide free official apps to recalibrate your controller's center position:
- For Xbox: Open the free Xbox Accessories app on Windows 11/10. Select your controller > "Recalibrate Analog Sticks" > follow the quick instructions.
- For PS5 DualSense: Download Sony's official Firmware updater for DualSense on PC and check for the latest updates.
- For Nintendo Switch: Go to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Control Sticks.
Fix 4: Hall Effect Stick Upgrades (Permanent Solution)
If cleaning and deadzone adjustments don't fix it, the internal sensor tracks are likely worn out. If you're looking for a lasting replacement, consider getting a controller with Hall Effect magnetic thumbsticks (such as 8BitDo Ultimate, GameSir G7 SE, or Flydigi Vader 4 Pro). Because they use magnets instead of rubbing parts, they practically never develop stick drift.
